Diabetes and Oral Health

It is important to understand the link between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease. Understand the presence of infection, including periodontitis, may make it more difficult to control blood glucose levels in diabetes.

Systematic reviews suggest patients with diabetes are at a 2-4 times greater risk for more severe periodontal disease than individuals without diabetes.

Evidence indicates individuals with diabetes had more severe periodontal disease and a higher blood glucose level than healthy individuals 

​

Nonsurgical periodontal therapy and management of periodontal disease has resulted in an average decrease in A1c of 0.6%

​

Management of periodontitis along with lifestyle changes may have an effect on lowering blood glucose levels.
