Experiencing Tooth Sensitivity?

What factors cause dentinal hypersensitivity?
-
Abrasion can result in gingival recession. This may come from brushing to hard or using an medium to hard toothbrush.
-
Grinding/Clenching
-
This causes teeth to flex at the gum line. The gum line then recedes and starts to destroy tooth structure.
-
-
Erosion from frequent use of acidic foods and beverages.
-
Metal jewelry in the mouth such as oral piercings.
-
Calculus (hardened plaque- induced biofilm) may also harbor underneath the gingiva (gum) causing gingivitis and may progress to destroying the bone holding the tooth causing periodontitis. This may also result in recession of the gingiva (gum), causing sensitivity.
(Wilkins, 2017, page 769)

Tooth pain or sensitivity can result from multiple factors including:
-
Dentinal hypersensitivity (exposed dentin) possibly due to gingival recession or loss of tooth structure
-
Caries (cavities) leading into the dentin layer or pulp of the tooth
-
Fractured restoration or fractured tooth
-
Sinus infection
-
Occlusal trauma
-
Recently placed restorations possibly needing an adjustment
-
Pulpitis (inflammation of the pulp in the tooth)
