  • Smoking and tobacco use

  • Excessive alcohol use

  • HPV-16 type

  • Increased age >40 

  • Sun exposure to the lips

Prevalence

  • Men have twice the rate of oral cancer than women

  • Oral cancer increases with the amount and duration of smoking

  • Oral cancer is more common in people who drink alcohol and smoke

  • HPV is associated with 20% to 30% of oral cancer cases
