ARE YOU EXPERIENCING DRY MOUTH?

Xerostomia (dry mouth) can be caused by many factors such as medications, aging, dehydration, systemic implications (ex. diabetes or autoimmune diseases), and diet.

How do I know if I'm experiencing dry mouth?
Symptoms and signs of dry mouth include
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Cracked lips
  • Cracked tongue
  • Sore throat
  • Change in salivary flow

If you are experiencing dry mouth it is recommended that you
  1. Reduce the intake of caffeinated beverages.
  2. Drink plenty of water
  3. Suck on sugarless candy or gum
  4. Use mouth rinses such as biotene (listed below)

Other ways to control dry mouth include:
  • Chewing xylitol gum or using xylitol melts
    • Xylitol is a natural sugar- alcohol that is approved for use in food by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)​ (Wilkins, 2017, page 836)
  • Use of alcohol free mouth rinses
    • Alcohol will dry the mouth out. â€‹
